McDonald’s UK raises the price of cheeseburgers for the first time in 14 years

After a long time of 14 years, the company has decided to raise the price of its signature cheeseburger for the first time ever. With immediate effect, the price raises by a fifth to £1.19, and additional price increases will follow as prices soar.

The fast food juggernaut has been selling its popular burgers for 99p in the UK, enabling consumers to indulge in the meat treat for less than a pound.

Maccies has now clarified, however, that “just like you, our firm, our franchisees who own and run our restaurants, and our suppliers are all experiencing the burden of growing inflation,” requiring a price increase.

The price of the cheeseburger will rise to £1.19 starting on July 27. Throughout the summer, a number of menu items will see price increases ranging from 10p to 20p.

Alistair Macrow, chief executive officer of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: “At times like this, we know that providing great value is important. Since we opened in the UK in 1974, we’ve committed to offering great tasting food at affordable prices, and that commitment will not change.

“But, today’s pressures mean, like many, we’re having to make some tough choices about our prices.

“This summer, our restaurants will be adding between 10p and 20p to a number of the menu items impacted most by inflation. From today, we’ll be increasing the price of our cheeseburger for the first time in over 14 years, taking it from 99p to £1.19. Some prices remain unaffected, and some will continue to vary across our restaurants.”

He continued: “We understand that any price increases are not good news, but we have delayed and minimised these changes for as long as we could. We will continue to listen to what you want from us and work tirelessly to find solutions to today’s cost challenges affecting our business.”

However, there is good news: halloumi fries have just been brought to UK menus.

The halloumi fries are one of eight new Mediterranean-inspired items that McDonald’s has added to its menu this summer in honor of Cyprus, Italy, and Spain.

Customers will pay £2.49 for a conventional quantity of halloumi fries (four sticks), while a larger “sharing” portion sells for £6.49. Whether you share them is up to you, though.

Customers visiting the rebranded Russian McDonald’s are posting pictures showing moldy buns and expired sauce for fries

Russians are posting images of their rotting hamburger buns from Russia’s rebranded McDonald’s, Vkusno I tochka, which translates to “Tasty and that’s it,” on Twitter and Telegram.

The images, which were submitted by followers of well-known Russian Telegram groups, primarily feature cuisine from renamed eateries in the Moscow area. In the middle of the country’s conflict in Ukraine, McDonald’s sold its Russian franchises to investor Alexander Govor, and Vkusno I tochka launched in June. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, McDonald’s first opened in Russia, where it remained for 30 years.

A Moscow-focused Telegram channel uploaded images of a Vkusno I Tochka hamburger with mould that one of the channel’s subscribers allegedly took in the city’s Khoroshyovo-Mnyovniki neighborhood. According to the account, management at Vkusno I Tochka was contacted for comment.

Vkusno I Tochka allegedly notified the channel it alerted the company making its buns about the mould in a follow-up post, according to the account. The press office for the restaurant company says it is investigating how the stale bread entered the restaurant.

In a Telegram post from Ksenia Sobchak, a Russian TV anchor, Sobchak posted another photo of a burger with moldy buns and wrote, “It seems that ‘Vkusno’ does not exactly honor the covenants held by McDonald’s. At least with regard to the quality of the product.”

Sobchak continued by claiming that two of her channel’s subscribers from Zvenigorod and Strogino also had mouldy hamburger buns in addition to the mould on the burger from Khoroshyovo-Mnyovniki.

At the end of her post, Sobchak wrote, “Guys, figure it out over there, there is no need to poison people.”

Twitter account @ru2ch posted more photos of expired buns it said came from a Vkusno i tochka in northwest Moscow.

Sobchak also shared a photo that shows expired cheese sauce for fries. The photo, she said, is from a “former McDonald’s” in central Moscow.

“It expired by one day, of course, but it’s a matter of principle,” Sobchak wrote.

RBK, a Russian media group based in Moscow, shared a Telegram post with comments from Vkusno i tochka on the expired sauces.

“We double-checked all the sauces, only a small quantity of them were expired, it has been taken off the shelves,” Vkusno i tochka’s press relations told RBK.

Vkusno i tochka plans to reopen all 850 former McDonald’s restaurants by the end of summer.
