Amy Schumer appeared on “Watch What Happens Live!” this week and denied stealing from Twitter the Leonardo DiCaprio joke she made during her monologue at the 94th Academy Awards. Accusations of joke stealing have followed Schumer throughout her career.
She roasted DiCaprio at the 2022 Oscars with the following joke: “He has done so much to fight climate change and leave behind a cleaner, greener planet for his girlfriends.” Social media users questioned whether or not Schumer stole the joke from a viral tweet posted in December 2021.
Her quip went: “Leonardo DiCaprio, what can I say about him? He has done so much to fight climate change and leave behind a cleaner, greener planet for his girlfriends.”
However, Schumer soon came under fire from Twitter users who managed to retrieve a very similar tweet from 2021.
“OK. Well, I would like to say, I haven’t personally been on Twitter,” she responded, when asked about stealing the joke, the Daily Beast reports.
“I’ve had my assistant do it, just so I can remain alive and not kill myself.
“And also, that joke was written by Suli McCullough. But I thank you guys, always, for making sure that I don’t start thievery.”
Schumer further added: “I just got to do a lie-detector test on Vanity Fair and they asked me, thank God, ‘Have you ever stolen a joke?’ and I said no, and it was ‘that’s true’.
“So, everybody just chill. It’s crazy. I’m funny enough, I don’t need to steal s**t.”
After it was revealed that a lot of her controversial jokes weren’t approved by The Academy, Schumer’s choice of jokes at this year’s Oscars has been the subject of great criticism.
The comedian made her first post-Oscars appearance on April 2 at the Mirage Theatre in Las Vegas, where she unveiled the jokes that didn’t quite make the cut.
James Franco, Joe Rogan, and, most notably, Alec Baldwin were among the celebrities on her list.
Schumer had planned to make a joke about Alec Baldwin accidentally shooting cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust after a pretend gun misfired.
As per Vanity Fair, she said: “I want to preface these Oscar jokes by saying that my lawyer said not to say these. Don’t tell anybody and don’t get mad at me.
“Don’t Look Up is the name of a movie? More like don’t look down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s shotgun. I wasn’t allowed to say any of that [at the Oscars], but you can just come up and [slap] someone.”
