‘Johnny Depp Shot’ for Men Feeling ‘Unsafe’ at Bar Sparks Controversy

This week, an alleged flyer for a Johnny Depp-themed drink that was found in the men’s room of an unnamed bar went viral online. The flier was first posted on Reddit by user u/lamodamo123, where it attracted more than 38,000 upvotes and 1,700 comments.

Bar divides opinion with Johnny Depp shot, created so men can discreetly ask for help

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four American men experiences intimate partner violence, which includes pushing, shoving, and slapping.

The sign, originally shared on Reddit, said: “Feeling unsafe or scared, just come to the bar and order a Johnny Depp shot,” and included three versions of the shot that will prompt different responses and actions from the bar employees.

It states that if you order “neat,” a staff will safely walk you out of the establishment. A bar employee will call a taxi for you if you request it “on the rocks,” and the police will be called if you want it “with lime.”

“We will handle things discreetly and without fuss,” the sign explained at the bottom.

The drink is thought to be a variation of the Angel Shot, which was developed to help women who might feel threatened or uneasy with other customers.

While the Angel Shot has received praise for its innovative idea, the shot named after the Edward Scissorhands actor has received conflicting feedback thus far.

Many people are expressing their opinions after a Twitter user shared the placard on the social media site.

One user wrote: “There’s a long way to go but Johnny is already making a difference for male targets of abuse.”

Another said: “I’m glad you highlighted this was in a male bathroom. I’ve seen posters for the angel shots & glad there’s a male equivalent!”

A third commented: “Absolutely love this so glad male victims are being [recognized] as victims too and they are making positive changes so male victims can come forward.”

Due to the actor’s recent defamation trial against his 36-year-old ex-wife Amber Heard, several people objected to the sign’s name.

One user wrote: “A) Yes, everyone should be able to have access to help without alerting whoever they’re with for safety. B) This is the dumbest possible thing they could’ve called it.”

Another commented: “I hope they have the same in the girl’s toilets and not just the men bc??? ‘We will call the police’ does sound a bit unhinged tho. Highly doubt they’ll call the police on any client who asks without questions?? The signs for women never say that.”

After information about his relationship with the Aquaman actress surfaced during the widely-publicized six-week defamation case in Fairfax, Virginia, the tavern reportedly dubbed its drink the “Johnny Depp shot.”

The Danish Girl actress Amber was found guilty of defaming Johnny Depp in an opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018.

Depp’s legal team claimed that the article was defamatory against her ex-husband even though he wasn’t mentioned in the passage where she claimed she had been the victim of domestic abuse.

He was given $10.4 million in compensation and punitive damages by the court after they agreed. Out of the $100 million in compensatory damages that Heard sought in her countersuit, she was given $2 million.
