McDonald’s UK raises the price of cheeseburgers for the first time in 14 years

After a long time of 14 years, the company has decided to raise the price of its signature cheeseburger for the first time ever. With immediate effect, the price raises by a fifth to £1.19, and additional price increases will follow as prices soar.

The fast food juggernaut has been selling its popular burgers for 99p in the UK, enabling consumers to indulge in the meat treat for less than a pound.

Maccies has now clarified, however, that “just like you, our firm, our franchisees who own and run our restaurants, and our suppliers are all experiencing the burden of growing inflation,” requiring a price increase.

The price of the cheeseburger will rise to £1.19 starting on July 27. Throughout the summer, a number of menu items will see price increases ranging from 10p to 20p.

Alistair Macrow, chief executive officer of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: “At times like this, we know that providing great value is important. Since we opened in the UK in 1974, we’ve committed to offering great tasting food at affordable prices, and that commitment will not change.

“But, today’s pressures mean, like many, we’re having to make some tough choices about our prices.

“This summer, our restaurants will be adding between 10p and 20p to a number of the menu items impacted most by inflation. From today, we’ll be increasing the price of our cheeseburger for the first time in over 14 years, taking it from 99p to £1.19. Some prices remain unaffected, and some will continue to vary across our restaurants.”

He continued: “We understand that any price increases are not good news, but we have delayed and minimised these changes for as long as we could. We will continue to listen to what you want from us and work tirelessly to find solutions to today’s cost challenges affecting our business.”

However, there is good news: halloumi fries have just been brought to UK menus.

The halloumi fries are one of eight new Mediterranean-inspired items that McDonald’s has added to its menu this summer in honor of Cyprus, Italy, and Spain.

Customers will pay £2.49 for a conventional quantity of halloumi fries (four sticks), while a larger “sharing” portion sells for £6.49. Whether you share them is up to you, though.

Salmonella halts production at the world’s biggest chocolate factory in Belgium

Salmonella contaminations have caused the world’s largest chocolate factory, operated by the Swiss company Barry Callebaut in Wieze, Belgium, to stop production.

According to a business representative, production at the facility, which creates liquid chocolate in bulk volumes for 73 companies that manufacture sweets, has been protectively suspended.

Salmonella bacteria were discovered at the world¿s biggest chocolate factory in Belgium, forcing production to stop

According to the organization, 72 of the 73 companies verified they stopped delivery of potentially contaminated chocolate in time to stop any from reaching the stores. One client’s response was still pending.

Salmonella, which causes salmonellosis, a condition that produces fever and diarrhea but is only seriously dangerous in the most severe forms, has not yet been linked to any reports of chocolate consumers.

“All products manufactured since the test have been blocked,” the spokesman said. “Barry Callebaut is currently contacting all customers who may have received contaminated products. Chocolate production in Wieze remains suspended until further notice.”

According to him, the majority of the contaminated products were still on the scene.

However, the company has contacted all of its customers and requested that they not ship any items that they have created using chocolate produced at the Wieze plant in Flanders, northwest of Brussels, since June 25.

“Food safety is of the utmost importance for Barry Callebaut and this contamination is quite exceptional. We have a well-defined food safety charter and procedures,” the firm said.

An inquiry has been launched, according to a spokeswoman for Belgium’s food safety regulator, which has been alerted.

Many food-related businesses, including industry behemoths like Hershey, Mondelez, Nestlé, or Unilever, rely on Barry Callebaut for their cocoa and chocolate needs. The 2020–21 fiscal year saw 2.2 million tonnes of sales from the industry leader in the world.

The Wieze plant does not produce chocolates for direct consumer sale, and the company has no reason to suspect that any contaminated products produced by clients have found their way onto store shelves.

The incident came just after chocolates made at the Kinder chocolate factory in Arlon, southern Belgium, were found to contain salmonella.

On June 17, the Belgian health authorities announced that they had given the Ferrero facility the all-clear to reopen for a three-month test period.
